Dennis Westgaard, of Dawson, died Friday, December 14, 2018 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 74.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 1:30 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson. Rev. Kendall Stelter will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be on Monday from 5-7:00 PM at Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. There will also be visitation at the church for one hour before the service on Tuesday.
Dennis Merle Westgaard was born January 5, 1944 at Dawson, MN the son of Harold and Irene (Ronning) Westgaard. They moved to Correll, MN in 1952 and he graduated from Odessa High School in 1962. Denny served in the MN Army National Guard. He was united in marriage with Ardith Smaagaard May 2, 1964 at Lac qui Parle Lutheran Church. They lived in Dawson, Clinton, Alexandria and Delano before returning to Dawson in 1976. He worked in lumber yards in each of these communities and worked as a carpenter with Harris Ronning when they moved back to Dawson. He later started his own carpentry business, Denar Construction. He built many houses in the community and surrounding areas along with numerous building and remodeling projects. His family has enjoyed and appreciated his many talents. He enjoyed fishing and spending time at the lake, listening to music, cooking, dancing the polka and being with family and friends. He was so proud of his girls and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Ardith; two daughters: Desrae (Dale) Kemen and Bobbi (Scott) Schacherer all of Dawson; four grandchildren: Alyssa, Brock and Sadie Kemen and Holland Schacherer.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother and a sister in infancy.
