James Nelson Obituary

James Nelson, formerly of Madison, died Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson at the age of 91.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 1:30 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madison.  Pastor Steven Frank will officiate and interment will be at Hayden Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 23 from 5-7:00 PM at Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson and for one hour before the service at the church.  There will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM Monday evening.

James A. Nelson was born February 14, 1927 in Arena Township, Lac qui Parle County, MN the son of Emil and Inge “Karine” (Aaberg) Nelson.  He was united in marriage with Shirley Fuoss March 19, 1950 in rural Marietta.  They made their home on a farm between Marietta and Madison.  James served in the US Army in Alaska during WW II.  He farmed west of Madison and they moved into town in  1965.  James worked at Lund Implement and continued to stop in there even after he retired.  Shirley died September 9, 1981.  After Shirley’s death, he married Helen Brehmer May 13, 1983.  Helen died March 28, 2015.  Jim participated in the honor flight to Washington DC in 2011.

He is survived by his children: Arlene (Gary) Miller of Dawson, Dale (Lynne) Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Nancy (Bruce) Mead of Canby; daughter-in-law, Janet Nelson of Madison; six grandchildren: Derrick (Jessica) Nelson, Adam Nelson, Alicia (Tad) Engstrom, Casey (Laura) Nelson, Tony (Julie) Mead, and Steve (Amber) Mead; nine great-grandchildren: Jack, Ada, Isaak, Merrick, Blake, Alexa, Tenley, Blayre, and Abigail; a sister, Elna Diment of Minnetonka, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents: his wives: Shirley and Helen; and a son, LeRoy Nelson.
