Michael Alan Thompson was born July 23rd, 1949 in Montevideo, Mn to Elmer and Irene (Miller) Thompson. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church on August 7th, 1949 and confirmed on June 7th, 1964 at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson. He attended school through 10th grade and began farming on his own at 15, later obtaining his GED. Mike was a combat Veteran and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War from 1969-1971. He was a squad leader, earning the rank of Sergeant during his time in the Army.

In 1971, Mike married Marcia Bergeson and they welcomed sons, Jamie and Corey. On August 18th, 1989, Mike was united in marriage to Kimberly (Storlien) Martinson at East Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt, SD. He welcomed her sons, Nathan and Jordan, into his family and thought of them as his own.

Mike was a farmer his entire life. He took pride in his hard work and the reward of good crop. Neighbors often joke that they don’t have to start thinking about getting in their field until they see Mike Thompson out in his. Driving around in his truck or Ranger while listening to oldies and checking on his crops was one of his favorite pastimes. Mike also was a seed salesman for 37 years. He loved working with other farmers and the friendships he made over the years. He was a devoted friend and always made sure his neighbors were taken care of. Mike was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Vietnam Veterans of America. He was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church and was committed to stewardship and service having volunteered as a board member. He also served on the board of Dawson Grain Co-op for several years.

Mike was an avid golfer and especially enjoyed his time on the golf course with sons, Jamie and Corey, as well as his friends in Texas. He cherished his days on the farm with Nathan and his grandsons, teaching them all he knew. He always looked forward to his trips to Vegas and winters in Texas with Kim. They spent many hours riding around together on the Harley or in his Shelby. His greatest joy in life was watching his grandchildren grow. He loved spending time with them and all of his family, even making sure he had a lake cabin close enough for everyone to enjoy together. Days at Lake Cochrane with Kim and the boys growing up and later with the boys, their wives, and grandchildren on Eagle Lake were some of his best memories.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kim; his sons and their wives: Jamie & Heather Thompson of Spicer, MN, Corey & Kristy Thompson of Elko, MN, Nathan & Jesi Martinson of Dawson, MN;  Grandchildren: Griffin, Preston, & Breck Thompson, Seth Thompson, Hunter, Matt, Paisley, & Bella Martinson, Brothers: Clarence, Steve (Judy), Jeff (Ardyce), & Jon; Brothers-in-law, John (Jill) Storlien and Mark (Kathy) Storlien, and Loren Kruschke; Mother-in-law, Marian Storlien,  along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Orgean Storlien, son Jordan Martinson, sister Evelyn Kruschke, brother-in-law Raymond Gordon, and sisters-in-law, Jean Thompson and Cindy Gordon.

Michael passed away peacefully at home on April 3rd, 2024, at the age of 74 with his family by his side. He left behind a legacy of love, faith, and service and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Blessed be his memory.
