Myrtle Haats Obituary

Myrtle Haats, formerly of Montevideo, died Monday, January 1, 2024 at The Landing of Augusta Woods in Spring, TX at the age of  94.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 2:00 PM at United Methodist Church in Montevideo.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens.

Myrtle Gloria Haats was born August 18, 1929, in rural Lone Tree Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota to William and Dora (Holtkamp) Sell. Myrtle was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Myrtle married Dick Haats on October 23, 1951. Dick and Myrtle had a wonderful life. Early in their marriage they operated a hardware store in Echo, Minnesota with Dick’s brother Ed and his wife Muriel, who was also Myrtle’s sister. After a few years, Dick and Myrtle settled in Granite Falls.  After moving to Montevideo, they welcomed their daughter Kathy and 3 years later welcomed their son Rich. They spent 45 years in Montevideo. Myrtle stayed home to raise their children and support Dick as he owned and operated R & D Auto Supply.

Myrtle enjoyed cooking. She was known by many for her angel food cakes, lefse, and cookies. She loved to sew, crochet, craft, and even knit. She was involved at Montevideo United Methodist Church serving in many roles. The turkey supper was one of the most memorable events.  In 2009, Dick and Myrtle moved closer to their son, Rich and his family in The Woodlands, Texas. She wasn’t a fan of the ‘hot’ weather but has grown to love it.

Myrtle enjoyed her time in Texas playing cards, playing bingo, doing crafts, watching her grandchildren grow up, and welcoming great-grandchildren. She looked forward to visits from her friends and family from out of state.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (and Don) Evans of Urbandale, IA and her son Rich (and Chris) Haats of The Woodlands, TX; her grandchildren: Lucas  (and Dedra Eichstedt) Evans of Atlanta, GA,  Rebecka (and Peter Dang) Haats of Yakima, WA, Rachel (and Brandon) Behanish of Ankeny, IA, Sara (and Evan) Walker of Conroe, TX, and Eric Haats of The Woodlands, TX; her great-grandchildren: Ellie Behanish of Ankeny, IA, and Thomas Walker of Conroe, TX,  and two more little ones on the way; her sister, Mavis Dagget of Apple Valley, MN; her  sister-in-law, Dianne Sell of Watertown, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Dick Haats; her parents, William and Dora Sell; and her siblings: Muriel Sell, Mildred Krohn, Stanley Sell, Marion Sell and Sidney Sell.

We would like to thank the staff of The Landing at Augusta Woods for loving her and caring for her the last few years.
