William "Don" Schacherer was born on July 22, 1935 in Dawson, MN to Wayne and Gertrude (Soehner) Schacherer.  Don was baptized at St. Michael's in Madison.  He had his first holy communion on July 1, 1945.  Don graduated from Dawson High School in 1953.  On April 26, 1956 he enlisted in the Marine Corp.  Due to medical reason he was discharged after a month.  He worked for Dawson Oil then moved to Iowa to drive truck and was involved in a bad car/pedestrian accident in Las Vegas in 1961.  After a lengthy recovery he attended Hanson Mechanical School in Fargo.  Then he went to work for Swift's in Marshall, MN.  He returned to Dawson to work for Anderson - Peterson truck wash and Dawson Oil for a few years before retiring in the mid 80's.  Don lived with his dad by Boyd until his dad died in 1992, and then remained there himself until 2011.  He moved to the Dawson apartments for awhile, then to Village Place in Lac qui Parle Village in May, 2014, until moving to the Johnson Memorial Home in Dawson in August, 2015.

Don was active in St. James and St. Joseph's parishes and enjoyed ushering.  He loved to garden, especially growing potatoes and peas, and doing yard work.  A lot of time was spent sprouting potatoes.  His favorite flower was a lily.  Family will always remember Don to always be there with a helping hand - whether it was to help with a car, fix fence, help get the sheep in or cutting wood.  His youngest sister, Mary often had a bowl of ice cream with him after he came home from work. Over the years, Don donated 17 gallons of blood, which helped save many lives.

Don is survived by 13 siblings: Wayne (Cathy) of Laurens, IA, Alice (Lambert) Abraham of St Leo, Eileen Rosik of Farmington, Glenice Meyer of Seale, AL, Al (Donna) Schacherer of Dawson, Virginia Shoen of Glen Burnie, MD, Muriel Bach of Canby, Lois Franson of Sugarland, TX, Harold (Barb) Schacherer of Boyd, John (Bonnie) Schacherer of Lakeville, MN, Jeff (Georgia) Schacherer of Hastings, Carol Andrews of Jordan, MN, and Mary Smith of Wabasso, MN; many nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
